unreal   Unreal Workshop

Ego-shooter games are characterized by fast graphics, action, intuitive handling and the fist person perspective. And they usually feature violent behavior. The level editor of Unreal Tournament 2004 (UT2004) that comes with the game allows to create own game levels. Thus interactive and immersive environments can be developed in a short time.

During the workshop we will get to know this design platform and we will (mis)use it to display our own content. To do so it is important to know the particular qualities of the virtual reality shown in UT2004: interaction, immersion, multiuser ability, behaviours, sounds, dynamic textures and light characteristics.

It is also essential to evaluate the provocative character of Unreal Tournament in order to fully understand the potential of these games as design tools. Using their playful aspects, their aggressive character or merely using them to create 3d environments will change the perception of the 'interactor' completely.

So while exploring the editing possibilities of UT2004 it is not the goal to imitate the standard game and design strategies but to stretch them - concerning spatial design, interaction possibilities and topic. The optimized connection of media and content will be the key to create a strong message.
